A BRUIN UPDATE

It's been a while since I've written in here - I've been sitting back and observing what's been going on in our Bruin Nation. Here's how I see things:

Our football team had their spring practices last month, the first under Rick Neuheisel. Just our luck - our top 2 quarterbacks, Ben Olson & Patrick Cowan, go down; Cowan has a torn ACL and is done for 2008. I think he should take a medical retirement. What with all his injuries over the past year or so, concussion and both his knees, it's sort of like God's telling him something. He's a fifth year senior, and while he's a gutsy kid with intangibles, it's not like he's an NFL prospect or anything. If I was him, I'd retire, focus on getting my degree, and perhaps try to get into high school coaching. I think he'd be great there. Olson has a broken bone in his foot and should be ready for fall practice. He'll probably have the inside track to be the starter, but that may not necessarily be a good thing, because the offensive line is, to put it bluntly, not going to be good. WAY too much inexperience, and it's not like they were that great last year, either. Whoever is going to be under center this fall is likely going to be running for his life. If I was coaching against us I'd blitz about 80% of the time, because I'd know that we wouldn't be able to handle it. There will probably be quite a few false start penalties this fall, too... Chris Forcier and JC transfer Kevin Craft better be ready.

Looks like the sport that has the best chance for a national championship is the Women's Water Polo team - again. 30-0 going into their playoffs.

I'll be back soon with more observations...
